Overview

A family in the New York area is seeking a warm, engaging, and experienced Part-Time Academic Tutor to provide academic support to their two high-school-aged children, with the primary focus being their 14-year-old daughter, who is currently in ninth grade.

The ideal candidate will be a strong all-rounder, comfortable assisting with homework across a range of high school subjects while helping the student develop stronger organisational skills, effective study habits, and greater independence in managing her academic workload.

The ninth grader is a bright and capable student who generally achieves A and B grades. She has ADHD and is finding the transition to high school somewhat challenging, particularly when it comes to organisation, time management, and planning ahead for assignments and larger projects.

The family is hoping to find someone who can build a positive relationship with their daughter, provide consistent academic guidance, and support her throughout her high school years.

The schedule will be three days per week, for two hours per session, ideally between Monday and Thursday. The family's preference is for approximately 7pm–9pm, although they can offer flexibility to include earlier hours for the right candidate.

Responsibilities

  • Provide homework assistance and general academic support across a range of high school subjects, including English, science, maths, and humanities.

  • Help develop effective organisational skills, time management, and independent study habits.

  • Monitor assignments, upcoming tests, and project deadlines using school platforms such as Google Classroom.

  • Support the student in breaking down larger projects, prioritising tasks, and planning ahead to avoid last-minute preparation.

  • Provide structure, encouragement, and accountability, adapting approaches to support the student's ADHD and individual learning style.

  • Offer occasional academic support to the family's tenth-grade student as needed.

  • Collaborate with the family and existing subject-specific tutors, providing regular updates on academic progress and areas requiring additional support.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience tutoring or providing academic support to middle-school or high-school-aged students.

  • Strong academic background and confidence assisting students across a broad range of high school subjects.

  • Experience supporting students with ADHD and developing organisational and study skills is highly desirable.

  • Excellent organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • A warm, patient, and engaging personality, with the ability to build positive relationships with teenagers.

  • Ability to provide structure and accountability while encouraging independence and self-confidence.

  • A background in teaching, education, or private tutoring is required.

Requirements

  • Must be legally authorised to work in the United States.

  • Must be available to work in person at the family's home in the New York area.

  • Availability for three weekday evenings per week, preferably Monday through Thursday, for two hours per session.

  • Some flexibility with scheduling would be appreciated.

  • Must be seeking a long-term position.

  • Excellent, verifiable professional references.

Salary and Benefits

The family is offering $75–$100+ per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.

The anticipated schedule is six hours per week, split across three weekday evenings, with flexibility for the right candidate.
