Housekeeper/Family Assistant

Overview

A warm, active family in Scarsdale, NY, with two young children -- a 2.5-year-old daughter and a 6-month-old son - and a small, sweet Boston Terrier is seeking a full-time Housekeeper / Mother’s Helper to support their home and family.

Mom is currently taking an extended maternity leave from her career to focus on spending quality time with her young children, and expects to eventually return to work in a more scaled-back or part-time capacity. The family is also hiring an Au pair who will primarily provide afternoon and weekend childcare support.

The general schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.

This is a highly hands-on role for someone who enjoys caring for a home and family and takes satisfaction in moving fluidly throughout the day between housekeeping, cooking, laundry, errands, and childcare as the family’s needs change. One moment may involve resetting the kitchen or starting dinner, and the next may involve feeding the baby or helping a child get ready for school. The family is looking for someone comfortable moving naturally between childcare and household responsibilities throughout the morning and then taking advantage of the quieter afternoon hours to focus on caring for the home.

The ideal candidate is seeking true longevity- ideally 10+ years - and takes pride in being a professional housekeeper and household caregiver. The family hopes to find someone who will become an important, trusted part of their lives over many years.

The right person will notice what needs to be done, take care of it, and help create a peaceful and organized home without needing constant instruction.

Most importantly, this person will help enable the parents to spend more quality time with their children, knowing that the household is cared for and everyday life is running smoothly.

The family currently lives in Scarsdale and may eventually move to another community in lower Westchester. The ideal candidate will be comfortable with that possibility and interested in remaining with the family through a potential future move.

Local candidates only, please.

Responsibilities

Includes, but is not limited to:

Household & Family Support

The majority of the role is focused on caring for the family’s home and helping everyday family life run smoothly.

Responsibilities include:

  • Daily housekeeping and household upkeep, including dishes, kitchen resets, making beds, light vacuuming/sweeping as needed, spot cleaning, and keeping bathrooms and living areas tidy between deep cleans
  • Managing family laundry from end to end, including washing, drying, folding, ironing as needed, putting clothes away, and keeping closets and drawers organized
  • Keeping the kitchen, pantry, refrigerator, mudroom, children’s rooms, play areas, closets, and other frequently used spaces organized and orderly
  • Preparing a simple family dinner each weekday, with straightforward meals discussed and agreed upon in advance; this is family cooking, not elaborate or formal cooking
  • Preparing and serving the children’s breakfasts, lunches, snacks, and other meals during working hours
  • Grocery shopping and proactively keeping groceries and everyday household supplies appropriately stocked, including purchasing or ordering items as needed
  • Receiving and putting away deliveries, opening household packages, breaking down boxes, and managing routine household returns
  • Running local errands such as grocery pickups, dry cleaning, pharmacy trips, post office/UPS/FedEx, returns, and other everyday household needs.
  • Taking out garbage, recycling, and cardboard as needed
  • Providing simple daily care for the family’s small dog, including feeding her as needed
  • Noticing routine household needs and taking initiative to address them rather than waiting for a detailed daily task list

The family has a separate cleaning service for periodic deep cleaning, so this role is focused on daily upkeep, organization, cooking, laundry, errands, and keeping the home running well.

Childcare Support

This is not a traditional full-time nanny position, and the family will also have an au pair who primarily provides afternoon and weekend childcare support. However, the candidate should genuinely love young children and be completely comfortable caring for a baby and toddler.

Childcare will be concentrated primarily in the morning hours, when an extra set of hands allows Mom to attend to her own activities and appointments.

A typical morning will include:

From approximately 8:00–8:30 a.m., helping prepare and serve breakfast for the family’s toddler, preparing and packing her preschool lunch, and getting her backpack and belongings ready for preschool

  • Occasionally driving the toddler to preschool when needed (Mom expects to handle preschool drop-off most of the time)
  • After preschool drop-off, independently caring for the family’s 6-month-old son for approximately 2–3 hours while Mom is out, including feeding him, playing and interacting with him, changing him, and putting him down for his morning nap
  • Preparing and serving the children’s meals during working hours and helping with the natural transitions around lunch and naps

Qualifications

  • Warm, nurturing, kind, and genuinely enjoys young children
  • Calm and naturally gentle in their presence
  • Friendly and caring without being overly talkative
  • An excellent homemaker type who takes genuine pride in maintaining a comfortable, orderly home
  • Experienced and confident with babies and toddlers
  • Independent, organized, and naturally proactive
  • Comfortable moving flexibly between different kinds of work throughout the day
  • Observant and able to anticipate what needs attention
  • Reliable, discreet, and trustworthy
  • Comfortable supporting appropriate boundaries, manners, and consistency with young children
  • Someone who takes pride in their professional work and would genuinely like to become part of a family’s life for many years

Requirements

  • Prior experience in a similar private-household role
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Strong and confident driver
  • Reliable transportation for commuting to work
  • Comfortable with a potential future move elsewhere within lower Westchester
  • Pet-friendly
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
  • Spanish-speaking is a plus, but not required

Salary and Benefits

The family is offering $40+/hour, commensurate with experience, PTO, and a negotiable medical stipend.
