Overview

A warm, down-to-earth family in SoHo is seeking a nurturing, energetic, and collaborative live-out mother's helper to help care for their 20-month-old son (who starts preschool in the Fall) and future children, from next year. The schedule will be 8/9am-5/6pm Monday through Friday, with flexibility.

This is a true shared-care position, as mom works part-time and is home and very involved in her son's day-to-day life. Summers (July and August) are spent on Long Island and candidates will be expected to live-in Monday through Friday (the family will cover all transport costs, pay an additional overnight fee, and provide separate accommodation).

The family has had the same baby nurse since their son was born and have a wonderful relationship with her. They hope she will return when they welcome their second baby, and they are looking for someone who shares her caring, supportive approach.

The family deeply values and respects the nanny-family relationship and is looking for someone who will become a long-term part of their lives as they plan to grow their family to three children. The family travel both domestically and internationally, so candidates should have a valid passport.

Responsibilities

The family employs a housekeeper three days per week, so the role is focused primarily on childcare rather than housekeeping.

  • Shared care of one toddler alongside mom.
  • Plan engaging, age-appropriate activities and outings.
  • Encourage learning through play, conversation, and exploration.
  • Prepare simple, healthy meals and snacks for the child (the family eats fresh, uncomplicated meals such as roast chicken and vegetables).
  • Child's laundry approximately 1–2 times per week.
  • Keep child's play spaces organized and tidy.
  • Support the family's daily routines with flexibility and initiative.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate enjoys working alongside parents, is comfortable taking initiative while also collaborating, and understands when to step in and when to give parents space. The family's son is active, outgoing, social, and loves being out exploring. They are looking for someone who genuinely enjoys children and wants to create fun, engaging days filled with outings, parks, museums, nature walks, exhibits, and age-appropriate educational experiences. The family would love someone who gets excited about planning adventures, whether that's visiting a children's exhibit or spending the day outdoors.

The family is very open to candidates who may not have extensive nanny experience. They place greater value on enthusiasm, warmth, energy, and a willingness to learn than on a long resume or formal educational background.

The ideal candidate:

The family's ideal nanny is warm, loving, and genuinely enjoys spending time with children. They are looking for someone who is constantly engaged, talks with the child throughout the day, and creates an environment that is fun, interactive, and developmentally enriching.

The ideal candidate knows how to support parents without taking over—someone who offers ideas and solutions while giving parents the space to parent in their own way.

They are hoping to find someone who:

  • Is energetic, enthusiastic, and loves being outdoors.
  • Is present and engaged—not someone who spends time on their phone.
  • Is patient, nurturing, and genuinely enjoys helping children learn through everyday experiences.
  • Is open to growing with the family over the coming years.
  • Is comfortable working as part of a team with involved parents.

Requirements

  • Previous childcare experience (formal nanny experience is not essential).
  • Willingness to learn and grow in the role.
  • CPR/First Aid certification.
  • A driver's license is preferred but not required.

Salary and Benefits

  • $40 per hour
  • Additional overnight fee for Summer live-in
  • Two weeks PTO
  • Monthly healthcare stipend of $500
  • MetroCard reimbursement
  • Paid transportation to and from the family's Long Island residence
  • Opportunity to grow with a warm, respectful family seeking a long-term relationship
